Touted as the national fruit of China, but grown worldwide, I rarely see organic kiwifruit
in my area, so I was delighted to find organic kiwifruit at a low price in my local health food
store this week.
Of course, I brought half a dozen home to try out and enjoy!
Well known for its characteristic fuzzy skin and its unique, sweet and slightly tangy flavor,
having fresh, organic kiwifruit is a special treat for me!
More than just a fuzzy face, it is an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin K, as well as a
good source of dietary fiber and vitamin E.
Kiwifruit contains carotenoids, such as provitamin A beta-carotene, lutein and
zeaxanthin.
Plus kiwifruit seed oil contains on average 62% alpha-linolenic acid, and an omega-3
fatty acid.
Generally, a medium size kiwifruit provides around 46 calories, 1 g protein, 0.3 g fat,
11 g carbohydrates, and 2.6 g dietary fiber found partly in the edible skin.
Enough said, let’s turn this nutritious fruit into a healthy, delicious, energizing green smoothie
and reap the rewards!
Strawberry, Kiwi, Chia and Kale Green Smoothie
Ingredients
2 organic kiwifruit
2 organic bannanas
1 cup organic strawberries
1/2 cup organic seedless grapes
1 organic orange
2 tablespoons organic raw almond butter
2 tablespoons chia seeds
2 tablespoons flaxseed meal
1 1/2 cups cold filtered water
2 cups organic kale
Directions
Wash and prep fruits and vegetables.
Add fruits, almond butter, chia seeds, flax seed power and water
to your high speed blender (I use a VitaMix).
Blend until smooth.
Add the kale to the liquid base.
Blend until thoroughly mixed.
Taste and adjust as needed.
Add more water if your smoothie is too thick.
Add more grapes if your want a sweeter smoothie.
This recipe should make at least two large mason jars full of
smoothie.
I like to drink a large glass right away save the rest to later.
Pour the extra smoothie into mason jars and store in therefrigerator.
Drink up and enjoy!

Important Note About Kiwifruit Allergies
Don’t consume kiwifruit if you suspect that you are allergic to it.
The actinidain found in kiwifruit may be an allergen for some.
If you are allergic to latex, bananas, papayas, or pineapples it is possible
that you may also be allergic to kiwifruit.
Common allergic reactions include irritations such as itching and soreness of the mouth.
Severe symptoms such as wheezing are most likely to occur in young children.
Kiwifruit also contains calcium oxalate crystals in the form of raphides.
Reactions to these chemicals include sweating, tingling, and sore mouth or throat;
swelling of the lips, tongue and face; rash; vomiting and abdominal
pain, heartburn; and, in the most severe cases, breathing difficulties, wheezing,
and collapse.

Okay, that kills it for me LOL. I’m allergic to latex and I’m not that crazy about kiwi but I was ready to give this smoothie a try. It looks so good and healthy. #wowlinkup
No problem! The good thing about all smoothies is that you can add and subtract whatever ingredients you wish!
I love green smoothies and this one sounds amazing. I haven’t had kiwi in a couple months so I think it is about time to rotate it back into the routine for a week or two.
Hi Tricia,
I hope you get some kiwis soon and whip up a smoothie for yourself. It really adds some zip to my smoothies!
Hi Tricia,
Yes, kiwifruit really adds a nice zing to a smoothie and kicks up the flavor! I hope you try it!
I can definitely drink this smoothie but my husband can always tell if I put kiwi in something. It hurts his throat and makes it scratchy. Folks are allergic to pineapple? #wowlinkup
Hi Diatta,
Yes, unfortunately some people are allergic to kiwifruit and the symptoms are very unpleasant. I have never had a reaction to it but it is important to be careful with your husband. Apparently there a a lot of foods and materials that cause allergic reactions in some people. That’s why I added that note to the end of the recipe.
Mmm I love kiwi but I’ve never put it in a smoothie. This looks yummy thanks for sharing! #wowlinkup

This looks so yummy! I haven’t had kiwi in a while because I feel it is hit or miss, but maybe I will go looking for one this week 🙂 #wowlinkup
What a wonderful sounding smoothie Deborah! I love the idea of combining kiwis & strawberries, especially with kale. And the almond butter just gives it a nice flavour and boosts the protein. YUM!
This looks great! I love kiwi and haven’t put it in a smoothie in ages! I will definitely be trying out this recipe!
Vitamin C – abundant fruits such as guava and papaya are specially
beneficial while skin tissues are strengthened by them.
