Getting a good night’s sleep is very important, but how often do you actually get the best rest you’re looking for?
Most studies show that the average American only gets about 6 hours of sleep per night — a full 2 hours less than doctors recommend.
So how do you make sure you can get the most out of every night’s sleep?
The 4 Stages of Sleep
One way to make sure you’re getting the most out of your sleep is to know how sleep works.
Contrary to what you might think, sleep is made up of several cycles rather than a straight descent — and each cycle consists of 4 different stages of sleep.
- Stage 1
- Stage 2
- Delta Sleep
- R.E.M Sleep
You will drift in and out of these stages pretty regularly as the night goes on.
The stages of sleep infographic (below) illustrates approximately how long each stage of sleep lasts along with key information about each stage.
