Who doesn’t love a fresh, fragrant-smelling home!
A pleasant-smelling is a happy place to be but make sure to rethink how you tackle the stink.
Think twice before you grab some of the conventional aerosol air freshener sprays, candles and
plug-ins.
For good reasons…
Unfortunately, many commercial air fresheners are full of toxic chemicals that are bad for your health
as well as the health of the environment.
Instead, go green and make your own natural DIY air fresheners with a few easy alternatives.
I kicked those aerosol cans to the curb a long time ago and now I enjoy freshening the air in my home
by adding essential oils to my diffuser.
I love to freshen the air or get rid of unpleasant odors by diffusing lavender, peppermint or tea tree
essential oils, especially in the bathroom.
Here are more delicious ways to freshen or deodorize your home, naturally:
Essential Oil Burner
Mix 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil, such as Joy or Peace blend, and purified water in the
bowl provided, then place a tea light in the specified area, and light.
Bathroom Refresher
Add a few drops of Key Lime, Calming or Purification essential oils on a cotton ball and place behind toilet.
For Household Cooking Odors
Add a few drops of Clove, Cinnamon, Adoration, Peace or any citrus Essential Oil to a simmering pan
of purified water.
All Purpose Home Air Freshener
Add Clove, Jasmine, Balance, Joy, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang or Sweet Orange to your diffuser.
And if you’re looking for a great diffuser, here’s one that I love!
Freshen the Fridge
When washing out the fridge, freezer or oven, add Lime, Grapefruit, Bergamot or Lemongrass essential oils
to the final rinse water.
Cigarette Smoke Remover Spray
Put 4 drops each of Rosemary, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus in a spray bottle with water.
Shake well before each use.
Dispel Paint Fumes
Mix a 10 ml bottle of Peppermint oil into a gallon can of paint to help dispel the fumes.
Turn Your Furnace Filter Fan into a Freshener
Place a few drops of your favorite essential oil on the furnace filter then turn on the furnace fan to
fill your home with a wonderful aroma.
You can use Vanilla, Pine, Cypress, Hope, Cinnamon Bark or Cassia to lift spirits during the holidays.
Firewood Freshener
Pine, Frankincense, Sage and Myrrh all make wonderful firewood oils.
Put 8-10 drops of Essential Oil on a dried log and allow time for the oil to soak in before putting
the log on the fire. (Note: Do not drop Essential Oils on log while fire is burning).
Candle Air Refreshener
Add aroma to a candle by placing a few drops of your favorite oil– i.e. 3 drops each of Sweet Orange
and Vanilla–into the hot melted wax as the candle burns.
(Note: Do not drop oil in candle while candle is lit).
Vacuum Cleaner Bag Trick
Put 5 drops of your favorite essential oil–such as Peppermint, Spearmint, Cassia, Purification or Pine–
on a cotton ball and place in your vacuum cleaner bag.
Geranium is great for getting rid of doggy odor.
Trash Can or Diaper Pail Pal
Place 1-3 drops of Four Thieves, Purification or Hope on a cotton ball and place on bottom of trash can
or diaper pail to cut back on odors and kills germs.
Natural Carpet Deodorizer
Add 5-10 drops of Lemon, Lavender, Geranium, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, Calming or Harmony to a
box of baking soda.
Mix well and sprinkle over carpets.
Let sit for an hour or more and then vacuum.
Freshen Smelly Shoes
We all know how a smelly pair of shoes can “light up” a room!
Place a few drops of Geranium directly into shoes or place a cotton ball dabbed with a few drops of
Lemon, Cleaning or Four Thieves into shoes to freshen them up.
Note: Some of the essential oils named above are from Young Living because I use them in my home.
