As much as we might want it, the fountain of youth doesn’t exist. However, that doesn’t mean that youthful skin is unattainable. Young and dewy skin is within your grasp, and it can be affordable. You heard me. You don’t have to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars going to the dermatologist and getting plastic surgery in order to improve your skin. Some individuals may benefit from a visit to the dermatologist, but before you schedule an appointment, check out our list of natural ways to take care of your skin.
Drink more water
If you’re dehydrated, your skin will be dehydrated. A lack of water will cause your skin to look dull, saggy, and loose. Prolonged periods of dehydration will accelerate the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Saying “just drink more water!” is one thing, but it’s much easier said than done. One of the easiest ways to ensure that you’re getting enough water every day, is to carry a large water bottle around with you. Try to drink 3 of these large bottles every day!
Increase antioxidant intake
Antioxidants give your body the necessary resources to combat aging and fight disease. The quality of the food you put into your body directly correlates to the health and appearance of your skin. Antioxidants will also reduce damage and inflammation. Inflammation is one of the top causes of wrinkles! Here are a few yummy foods that are high in natural antioxidants and will do wonders for the quality of your skin.
- Organic green tea
- Blueberries
- Dark chocolate (higher than 70% cacao)
- Spinach
- Raspberries
- Acai berries
- Purple grapes
- Seeds
- Goji berries
- Nuts
Exercise
Exercising regularly improves the circulation of oxygen and nutrients throughout your body, and it also releases toxins through your sweat. This leads to clearer and firmer skin.
Make the switch to non toxic cleaning products
Toxic chemicals will affect your skin, whether you’re applying them directly to your skin or not. Just using toxic cleaning products in your home will absorb into your skin and wreak havoc. Make the switch to non-toxic cleaning products to clear up your skin.
Limit your sun exposure
Unnecessary and excess exposure to the sun will accelerate the aging of your skin. The faster it ages, the more wrinkles and discoloration you’ll experience. One of the most important things you can do to your skin is to make sure that you are applying an SPF to your skin every single morning, religiously. And be picky about the type of sunscreen you’re applying on your face. Pick a high SPF that is specifically made for your skin so it is gentle and won’t clog your pores. You want to look for a product that has zinc and/or titanium, and is lightweight.
Add a bit of green to your life
Owning a plant or two will improve the quality of your skin. This is because plants improve the air quality, so having plants in your home will clear up your skin and make you appear more youthful.
Healthy fats
You’ve probably been told your whole life to avoid fats. I’m here to tell you that that’s wrong. Fats are good for you, and actually necessary for your body, as long as they’re the right fats. Healthy fats. These fats will improve your skin, keeping it clearer, and improve all other areas of your health as well. A few favorite healthy fats are:
- Olive oil
- Nuts
- Avocados
- Flax seeds
- Fish
Get more Vitamin C
One of the best vitamins you can take for your skin is Vitamin C! The best way to ingest Vitamin C is through foods where it is naturally occuring, instead of solely through supplements (although taking supplements with Vitamin C isn’t bad; it’s just best to get the majority of it through foods!). A Vitamin C rich diet leads to less wrinkles.
Get more sleep
Your skin rejuvenates while you sleep every night. In fact, 35% of skin repair and recovery happens while you’re sleeping. That’s a huge amount. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, your skin won’t have the chance to repair itself. You want to make sure that you’re not only sleeping eight hours every night, but that the sleep you’re getting is also quality sleep without interruption.
