What is holistic health? This is a wellness strategy that focuses on the physical, mental/emotional and spiritual aspects – or body, mind, and spirit of an individual. By spirituality or spirit, I am not referring to anything religious.

This is about the core of who you are… the main self. The conventional doctors care for the body and neglect the mind, the traditional mental health practitioners care for the mind and neglect the body. Neither cares for the spiritual aspect. Both treat the symptoms with medication or surgery instead of looking for the cause of the symptom.

A holistic approach to health does not see the body, mind, and spirit as different entities and fosters medications and surgery only when it is necessary and after alternative solutions have been looked for. It explores the root causes of symptoms, as opposed to simply covering up with medications.

Body, mind, and spirit cannot be separated from each other. They are interlocked. What concerns one affects the others. A conception that is centered around one area is an unbalanced approach.

The World Health Organization reports that between 65 to 80 percent of the world’s population depends on holistic health organizations for their health care.

In general, holistic health organizations were created to stimulate physicians and professionals to adopt holistic approaches to health service delivery and to inform the public about these practices so that they would better understand, appraise and make decisions concerning their health care.
