It is easy to get lost in the thoughts and problems we are surrounded by daily, either at home or at work. We all need to relax from time to time – recharge our batteries, shift our thoughts to something positive and gain new energy. Fortunately, we can do just that in the comfort of our own homes – here’s how.

Create a Zen zone

Think about the things that don’t belong in your Zen retreat and do a proper clear-out – minimalist look is what we’re going for. We live in a time when constant messaging and e-mails are a part of our daily lives, but they can really disrupt our thoughts and distract us. Therefore, consider keeping the electronic devices out of the zen zone. Create a peaceful area in your house that is going to be reserved for you only – no phones, no computers and definitely no TV.

Go green – literally!

To freshen things up and make your room come to life, introduce some greenery into your living space. Other than having an enormous positive impact on your overall health and mood – since they provide oxygen and filter the air – they also create a calming atmosphere. Opt for low-maintenance plants like a Bonsai tree, Aloe vera, some succulents or a bamboo plant – whichever you choose, it’s certain to bring a dose of tranquility into your living area. Soothing to the eye, functional and calming – what more could you wish for?

Go with simple & natural fabrics and furniture

Implement things like carpets, curtains and bed sheets made of natural materials such as cotton, linen, and wool. When it comes to furniture – go with chairs, tables, and shelves made of wood, with clean lines and a simple look. Same goes for wall decorations and trinkets – keep everything to a minimum. Introducing a few pictures and a couple of figurines is alright as long as they match the aesthetic of the room and aren’t too distracting.

Design a peaceful outdoor retreat

Think about how you can use all that extra space outside to relax and enjoy in. Maybe you can add some outdoor furniture like tables and chairs. Installing a nice fountain is also a good idea, since the sound of the water can relax you –it’s especially useful if you meditate outside. Another thing you should consider investing in is a nice outdoor spa pool – it’s a great idea for relaxation and recreation. Who wouldn’t like a nice oasis in their own backyard?

Use natural light and go with neutral color palette

Allow some natural light to come in – draw those curtains! Bright and airy spaces, coupled with soothing colors, will lift your mood and make it easier for you to concentrate. Paint the walls in neutral, earthy tones like beige, brown and green. You can use some pastel colors, too. Soft blue is also a good idea, since it has a calming effect on our brains. Make sure to match the materials and colors throughout the room to get a sense of cohesiveness and balance.

Natural scents from candles

Want to create a place to unwind and allow your mind to drift – what better way to do it than by lighting some scented candles?  Sprinkle them around the room, vary their sizes and opt for natural candles with healthier wax – coconut, soy, and beeswax. Diffusing essential oils is another great way for filling your rooms with natural scents. Make it a habit to use natural alternatives to ones full of harmful chemicals, like paraffin candles and air fresheners. The scent of natural candles serves as a great finishing touch to your Zen retreat, while being environmentally friendly. It’s a win-win situation – for us and for Mother Nature!
