Looking back at last Christmas, there might be a few things you want to change and improve this year – that’s often the case. However, if you leave it too late, you might have to repeat what you did last year, even if you know it’s not quite right, and that can be even more disappointing. That’s why, if you have an idea of how you want your Christmas to be in your head, you need to plan in advance to make sure it happens (as far as possible, at least).

One thing you’ll want to bear in mind is creating the ideal festive atmosphere in your home this Christmas. In reality, that could be all that’s missing, and if you get that right, everything else will fall into place, and you can have the Christmas you really want, the Christmas you’ve dreamed of for the last 365 days. With that in mind, here are some of the best ways to give your home a more festive feeling.

Decorate

It might sound like a simple (and perhaps obvious) thing to say, but decorating your home for Christmas is going to make it feel and look a lot more festive and really help to give you and everyone who lives there and comes to visit the Christmas spirit.

Start with your Christmas tree because that’s really the centerpiece of your Christmas decorations. You can choose a traditional green tree (either real or fake), or you can try something different – take a look in the stores and online, and you’ll see you can get Christmas trees in all kinds of colors and styles. When you start your search early, you’re sure to find something that works well for you, and that makes you feel really Christmassy.

Then decorate the tree with all kinds of ornaments, lights, and, of course, something on the top (stars or angels are popular choices). And don’t just stop at the tree, either; you can decorate the rest of your home with garlands and tinsel as well as lots of lights. You can even invest in some festive throws and cushions that will set your rooms off perfectly.

Get The Lighting Right

What’s Christmas without lights? They’re something you’ll expect to see twinkling merrily away both inside and out, and they’re a great way to give your home a really festive atmosphere this year. Although there is, of course, such a thing as too many lights, you can also have too few, so there’s a fine balance to be struck, and a lot of that balance is going to be down to personal taste. Start by putting lights everywhere (including around the tree, along the mantlepiece, up the stairs, and around the windows), and then cut back if it feels like it’s a bit too much and potentially overwhelming when you switch them on. Don’t forget the outside of your home either – you can make an amazing outdoor Christmas light display that will make your home the most festive one on the street. Sometimes people collect money for charity by inviting people to enjoy their Christmas lights, and since Christmas is a time for giving, that could be a good thing to do.

You don’t have to just use electric lights to make your home more Christmassy; candles can be great too. Of course, you do need to be careful where you place them (they’re a lot more dangerous than electric lights), but if you take care, they can be ideal. Not only do candles look lovely and festive, but if you choose scented ones, they can make your home smell like Christmas as well, whether it’s pine trees, cinnamon, vanilla, gingerbread, or anything else – whatever you associate with Christmas, there’ll be a scented candle to deliver that scent to you.

“There’s a lot to be said for homemade cookies,

gingerbread, cakes, and other treats,

and the very act of making them can be a

great way to feel more festive.”

Bake Christmas Treats

Something else that will make your home smell like Christmas is if you bake a load of tasty festive treats to enjoy. There’s a lot to be said for homemade cookies, gingerbread, cakes, and other treats, and the very act of making them can be a great way to feel more festive anyway – especially if you do it with friends and family or with some Christmas music playing in the background.

It’s not as though these baked goods will go to waste either; you’re sure to find the time to enjoy munching them over the Christmas period, whether it’s when you get in from a hard day of Christmas shopping, for dessert on Christmas day, to enjoy together watching , or perhaps even to leave out for Santa on Christmas Eve!
