England’s Lake District, located in the northwest of the country, is a stunning destination complete with multiple lakes, mountains and countless towns and villages. Consisting of 16 lakes and at least 200 fell tops, the Lake District attracts visitors from around the world. The area receives over 17 million tourists a year.
As well as its breathtaking surroundings, the Lake District also has a historical impact on the UK. It was home to renowned writers including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, providing them with endless inspiration for their stories. You can still visit the homes of these historical figures, adding that extra bit of magic to the area.
It’s safe to say that the Lake District has it all; with so many activities and sports, along with a serene landscape and historical monuments, it might just be the perfect destination for your next break. Types Of Walks
Within the Lake District, there are countless walks but the beauty of it is that there is a path for every ability. Some of the easiest walks in the area are between 2-5 miles, and while they require proper walking boots, they are easy to navigate.
For those looking for more of a challenge, harder walks can be anywhere from 9 miles to 11 miles. They can include features such as steep ascents or descents, and you may require a good level of fitness to complete them. Some walks could take a couple of hours, while others may take a full day. The choice is all yours!
If you are already an avid walker, you could also consider scaling England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike.

Walks Around The Lakes
The loveliest scenery and most impressive scenery that has been inspiration to many over the years, can now become your setting for a peaceful walk. The Lakes really are a place of natural beauty, and with so many to choose from, you might find the decision difficult.
The northern part of the Lakes is home to multiple bodies of water, all offering a wonderful environment for an afternoon walk. Derwentwater, located on the edge of Keswick, is surrounded by the fells of Cat Bells, Friar’s Crag and the Borrowdale Valley. A walk around this lake is 8 miles, offering the perfect opportunity for some much needed fresh air. With Keswick nearby, you have the chance to explore this historic market town too.
Likewise, Ullswater offers numerous paths from relaxed lakeside walks to high ridge climbs. With Helvellyn not far away, you have the chance to see England’s third highest peak too.
Seeing Historical Sites
While you’re enjoying your walk, you might want to consider including some of the Lake District’s historical sites on your journey if possible. Castlerigg Stone Circle is hailed as one of the earliest British circles, appearing sometime around 3000 BC. With a dramatic backdrop, Helvellyn and High Seat overlook the circle.
It was also one of the first monuments in the country to be recommended for preservation by the state.
Other historical sites in the Lake District area include numerous historic houses, such as Mirehouse, and the ruins of 13th century Shap Abbey. You’ll also find lots of Roman connections, including forts and roads that have been here for thousands of years.
