During the last year, the world has seen a surge in dog owners; from puppies to adopting senior dogs, many families have welcomed a new furry friend. If you have been a dog owner before you may be well aware of the settling-in issues that can come with a new pet – one such issue is that of sleep.
According to Lords and Labradors it is a fact that adult dogs need between 12 to 15 hours of sleep a day, and when you initially welcome a new dog to the home you may find they sleep a lot less due to settling in and getting used to their surroundings.
This post shares 3 tips any dog owner can implement to ensure their dog gets the sleep they need.
Designated Spot
Just like humans, dogs like routine, and having a designated spot that is just for them can help enforce a good sleeping pattern. There’s no clear rule as to where the spot needs to be, just make sure it is comfortable, warm, draught-free, and peaceful.
Bathroom Breaks
To prevent your dog from waking in the night it’s important to take your pooch into the garden or around the block for a bathroom break. An empty bladder will help them to sleep much better during the night.
Lighting
Just like humans, dogs sleep better when it is dark with little to no distractions. Therefore, turn out the light and close the windows and curtains/blinds to prevent light from seeping in. This will help your four-legged friend to get that 12 to 15 hours.
There are many other ways to help your dog get an amazing night’s sleep, but a key tip is to think about what sleeping environment works for you and try to emulate that. Obviously, different breeds like different things, to find out which breed works for your lifestyle look at our post all about the subject here.
