I have made lists of why I want to exercise, repeated my mantra “It will hurt worse if you don’t,” blown off countless folks who’ve tried to hold me accountable. None of it seems to help. I even like doing yoga and walking and pilates. But getting me off my sorry backside when I’ve got a pile of stuff I’d rather be getting done – the desk wins every time. Argh!
I absolutely agree that variety is key. I started getting fit by running but I also had a shift in my targets at some point and started aiming to exercise 5-6 days a week (which is UK government guidelines) rather than 3 days a week as I had before. To do this you HAVE to mix it up, otherwise the same muscles get tired and it becomes more difficult and less effective.
One of the key things which has helped over the past year is discovering Fitness Blender on Youtube. They are fantastic and so varied in both type of workout and duration. The thing is now I have no excuse. My philosophy is also that if I only have 10 minutes to exercise it’s better to do 10 minutes than nothing.
Unfortunately the exercise wins for me every time meaning my house is an absolute tip but at least I’m fit and healthy! Right, must get to that washing up…
One member of my group was just talking about variety. Thanks for the ideas. I’ll pass this along to my group.
Making a list of reasons for exercising is a great place to start! Having pictures of why you are working toward that goal helps too (family, marathon, vacation, healthy lifestyle). Thanks for linking up at the Bloggers Brags party, I pinned your post to our group board.
This is absolutely right start small, switch it up for variety and keep it fun.
