All of us take the health of our knees for granted until we start experiencing pain in them one day. Dealing with any kind of knee pain can be quite difficult, and it can make even the simplest of daily movements difficult for you. Knees have a complicated structure biologically compared to other joints, which makes it more injury-prone. Whether you are an athlete who is training excessively or it is just the age catching with you, knee pains can appear for several different reasons. They do not go away on their own, and you have to work on them to heal it and prevent worse injuries. In most cases, you will need medical help as well if you want your knee to recover.
Here are a few tips that can help you deal with your knee pain in a better way:
Don’t Make Assumptions
If you are experiencing knee pain, it is always best to go to a doctor and get it examined. Most people start assuming what is wrong with their knee as soon as they start experiencing mild pain. If you are an athlete, you will just assume that it is the anterior cruciate ligament that is acting, and if you are in your fifties or sixties, you will assume its arthritis. But there can be several other reasons behind your knee pain as well. You could have damaged articular cartilage, a torn meniscus, or other kneecap problems. Some of those may require surgery, too, but alternatively, you can go for knee arthroscope treatment as they are less risky.
Identify if the Pain Is Traumatic or Non-Traumatic
When you can point towards an event after which you started experiencing pain, then falls under the category of traumatic pain. This means if you start experiencing the pain after you fell during your soccer game, you are aware of what started it. Non-traumatic pain is something that builds up over time. It happens when you are going on long runs or playing sports with your friend and are putting too much stress on your knees. Just remember non-traumatic pains can also be equally serious, so it is better you get it checked.
Lose Weight
Obesity is one of the most common non-traumatic causes of knee pain in many adults. If you have put on too much weight and your knees are not able to handle, it is important for you to start working out asap. You don’t necessarily have to start big, you can do small safe exercises, and you can work your way up from there and lose more weight.
Don’t Wear Flat Shoes or Heels
If you are already experiencing small or mild knee pain, then it is highly recommended that you avoid wearing heels as they put a lot more stress on your knees and will only add more pain to it. Similarly, avoid wearing shoes that are way too flat at the bottom. It is highly recommended that you wear shoes that have arch support and do not put much stress on your knees.
