The most important aspect of a wedding is making sure that two people are declared legally married by the end of the ceremony. Well, that’s what many a wedding planner has told one or both members of the couple when something goes wrong leading up to the big day, anyway. There certainly is some truth to that–but if two people wanted only the legal stuff, they’d probably head to the courthouse and call it a day. Most people who decide to have a full-blown wedding want more than that. They want a celebration with friends and family that reflects something about who they are as a couple. Every wedding has its own sense of style.
What Defines You
Styles is much more than the clothes we wear. It’s how we carry ourselves and the image we try to project. It’s not only in the decor and theme of a wedding, but also in how people attending the wedding feel. A couple who wants a low-key, earthy wedding might encourage guests to wear comfortable clothes and bohemian jewelry. A couple looking to project a sense of classic elegance may make the dress code black tie optional. The average American wedding costs more than some workers make in a year, mostly because couples are looking to bring a personal touch to as many aspects of the day as possible.
That doesn’t mean that spending $30,000 on a wedding is required. It is just one day, albeit one very significant day. There are multiple ways to cut costs, without losing any sense of fun. A DJ is cheaper than a live band, and asking guests to serve themselves at a dinner buffet is often less expensive than having waiters serve everyone a sit-down meal. Think about the theme you want, but also think about your guests. Yes, it’s your day, but it’s also a day for you and your intended to act as kind, generous hosts to the people you care about.
Destination Weddings
The mood of the wedding will also depend a lot on where the wedding is being held. A country club wedding at noon is going to have a different vibe than a ceremony held by the beach at sunset. A destination wedding in another country will have a wildly different feel than anything that takes place within the United States. For example, a couple getting married in Australia may want to spend a little extra time purchasing engagement rings in Brisbane, or two people getting married in Italy may want to buy their wedding attire at a local shop rather than shipping it over from the States.
A destination wedding can be a wonderful experience, but it can also bring some complications. A couple who lives in Florida can’t expect a marriage license from Florida to be valid in France. Local civil or religious figures will have to perform your wedding, depending on the laws of the country. Make sure your marriage will be recognized back in America before you commit to throwing the party on another continent. Wherever you’re wed, a strong sense of what you want and what matters most will go a long way towards helping you and your spouse create lasting memories.
