South Florida is a place that is exceptionally easy to fall in love with. With pristine golden beaches, the natural beauty of the Everglades, thousands of picturesque islands, and the glitz and glamour of Miami, there’s something for everyone in SoFlo.
Southern Miami is an exceptionally popular spot for luxury cruises, with cruises from Fort Lauderdale exploring the Keys, the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, all of which are right on the doorstep. With a wealth of amazing experiences and gorgeous sights in South Florida itself, a few days exploring the area is the perfect way to start or finish a magical cruise experience.
Things to do
Miami
The Magic City is glitz, glam, white sands and sun-drenched marinas. An imaginative, inventive city with a truly wild party scene, no trip to South Florida would be complete without taking in the neon glories of Ocean Drive, or seeing the awesome downtown skyline.
The Everglades
The extraordinary wetlands of the Florida Everglades are one of the world’s most amazing natural phenomena. The Everglades are packed with wildlife, from gators to panthers, while the flora is out of this world. The frontier nature of life on the fringes of the Everglades is an exciting experience too, so be sure to grab a beer at a crab shack and get to know the alligator-wrestling, Swamp Ape-hunting locals.
The Keys
The Florida Keys are a strung-out chain of gorgeous, eccentric islands, full of quirky characters and eye-opening natural beauty. Glittering waves, tranquil bays and tiny, no-name islets make up this remarkable archipelago, joined together by one of the world’s most spectacular roads, the Overseas Highway.
Places to stay
Miami
Miami is diverse, buzzing and full of life, with exceptional cuisine, great culture and an unparalleled party scene. Neighbourhoods like Wynwood and The Grove offer hip nightspots and cutting-edge art, while the bright lights of Downtown are hard to stay away from.
Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale’s beaches are some of the best in Florida, while it avoids the hustle, bustle and traffic that can overwhelm Miami at times. It’s a great spot to stay if you are planning a trip to the Everglades, as the Everglades Holiday Park is just a short drive away from the centre of town.
Key West
For boating, snorkelling and fishing opportunities, and for the chance to stay somewhere genuinely remote and unfeasibly gorgeous, Key West is a great choice. Perched right at the tip of the keys, at the end of the stunning Overseas Highway, Key West is a slice of relaxed paradise with some of the most breathtaking views you are ever likely to see.
How to get around
There are great public transport options in and around Miami, including the Metromover, Tri-Rail, and the Gables Trolley. Local airlines serve the major Florida cities, and smaller services take you to smaller, more remote areas. Getting around by boat is a great option, from Miami and Fort Lauderdale but also around the Everglades and the Keys, while local buses are also an option in most parts of the state. To really get a taste for the Keys, however, a car is essential.
