Eyebrows play an important role in our looks and our life. They translate expressions and let us communicate effectively. Our eyebrows also help in defining our face and determining the way we’re perceived by others. It’s no wonder that they can be difficult to get right. From razor-thin arches during the ‘90s to power brows in the late 2000s, eyebrow trends have drastically evolved over the past few years.
Many celebrities like Cara Delevingne and Lily Collins have embraced thicker eyebrows. The latest “perfect” eyebrow is also the one that looks the most natural – fluffy, groomed, and defined. The best part is that you can easily get beautiful brows with just a few tools in your cosmetic bag. These are the few simple steps you need to follow to achieve flawless brows.
“You can easily achieve flawless brows
with just a few tools in your cosmetic bag
and a few simple steps.”
Step #1: Get the right eyebrow shape
The perfect brow shape is not the same for everyone; it’s actually determined by your facial features. You can use a long pencil to figure out your ideal brow shape. Line it straight with your nose and the inner tip of your eye. The area that intersects with the pencil and your eyebrow should be the starting point of your inner brow. Mark it with your eyeliner.
Align the same pencil on the outer edge of your nostril with the outer end of your iris. Mark the spot that overlaps with your brows as that’s where your eyebrow should peak. Move the pencil to line up with the outer part of your nose and the outer tip of your eye. The point of intersection will be where your brow should end.
When you work on your eyebrows, stand one foot away from the mirror for a better point of view. If you stay too close, you risk damaging the overall look of your eyebrows. As for your brows’ thickness, you need to assess at your facial features. If you have bigger eyes or fuller lips, you should opt for a fluffier brow. However, thicker brows will overpower smaller eyes or thinner lips. So, choose the right size that complements your face.
Step #2: Prepare your eyebrows
Tame your eyebrow hair strands by brushing them with a brow brush or a clean mascara brush. Once you’ve decided the rough shape of your brows, join the eyeliner dots with a colored eyebrow pencil. The hair strands that fall outside the border are the ones you need to pluck. You should pluck your brows in a well-lit area to ensure that you do it properly.
It’s now time to create the appearance of your eyebrows. Pull your skin tight, target the strand with your tweezers, and pluck them one at a time. Start at the inner brow area and move towards the tip of your eyebrows. Apply a moisturizing cream onto your brows to reduce the chances of getting ingrown hairs. Plucking can cause skin irritation, redness, and inflammation. So, apply some aloe vera gel afterward to soothe the area.
Most people pluck hair from both brows simultaneously to achieve symmetrical eyebrows. However, in the pursuit of uniformity, you could be over-plucking the hair strands. Stick to the border and pluck only when necessary. Your brows will look fine as long as their overall shape looks very similar.
Step #3: Style your eyebrows
Since eyebrow hair doesn’t grow evenly, use an eyebrow pencil to make your brow look fuller. Pick a colored brow pencil that is a few shades lighter than the color of your eyebrows. This will create a beautiful shadow effect that would add more dimension to your face. Go over the thinner spots to make short and mild strokes for a natural look.
It’s essential that you don’t stray out of the border or color on the contours of your brow. This can lead to an awkward shape that looks odd and unnatural. If you want a thicker brow, go heavy on the pencil lines. Alternatively, you should keep the strokes minimal for a slimmer shape. Once you’re done, carefully comb your brow to ensure they are pointed towards the right direction. Take extra care not to smudge the pencil lines or ruin its form.
The last step is to set your eyebrows in its final shape. Pick a high-quality, lightweight, and waterproof eyebrow gel that holds your brows in place throughout the day. Opt for a tinted formula if you want to add some color to your brows. Use the brow brush to apply a small amount to the inner area of your eyebrow. Move the brush in an outward motion to comb the hair and blend the gel into your eyebrows. You should also define and set the final shape with the help of the brush.
Step #4: The final touches
By the end of step #3, you will have a beautiful set of eyebrows. However, it’s the final touches that make your brows flawless! After putting in so much effort, you really want your eyebrows to stand out. So, use a clean Q-tip to align any strays and clean up any tint that had leaked out. Take a stick highlighter that is close to the color of your complexion. Gently apply it on your brow bones and blend it into your skin. The brighter contours attract more attention to your eyebrows and make it look more striking and noticeable.
Achieve perfect eyebrows every day
While you need to maintain your eyebrow shape, avoid plucking too frequently. You only need to pull out your tweezers every 6 – 8 weeks. Perfect eyebrows are not exclusive to special occasions – your brows can look gorgeous every day. All you need to do is slightly change your daily makeup routine. However, practice step #3 and step #4 to keep up with the morning rush and reach your office on time. Once you finish applying your makeup, pick up an eyebrow pencil and fill in your brows. Finish it off by applying some eyebrow gel and you’re ready for the day!
