Natural dyes and pigments have been used since prehistoric times by artists from many different cultures. Even with the advent of oil paints in the 19th century, many artists continued to work with natural dyes because they’re environmentally-friendly and free from toxic chemicals. In fact, you can make your own DIY natural pigments right at home and use them for a variety of different art projects. Create a beautiful painting, stain wood, dye fabrics, and even make ink for henna tattoos.
Natural dyes come in three categories: natural pigments obtained from plants, natural pigments obtained from animals, and natural pigments obtained from minerals. Many dyes require a mordant, an element that combines with a dye and the fiber so that the dye is absorbed. These dyes are referred to as “adjective dyes.” Those that don’t require mordants are called “substantive dyes.” Common mordants include iron and tin.
From Roots to Fruits
Plants, roots, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and flowers each generate a unique color when applied. Madder, Woad, Indigo, Sumac, Beet, Safflower and Blueberries are some common plants used to generate vibrant pigments.
Natural dyes are found in rocks and soil worldwide. Every mineral produces their own unique colors. Some examples of mineral pigments are Ochre, Sienna, Azurite, Cobalt, Ultramarine and Spinels.
