It’s not always easy being green. If you want to do your bit for the planet by redecorating your home to be more eco-friendly, make sure you are choosing these green alternatives in order to reduce your carbon footprint.
Reuse and recycle
Before embarking on a new design for your home, look at what you have and what already works. If you have a set of drawers or a cabinet that can do a perfectly good job, there is no need for you to throw them away. These pieces could easily be repurposed in other rooms – or reborn with a lick of paint. Even if you don’t have a use for them right away, you might be able to store them away in a shed or garage to call upon again further down the line.
Add plants
House plants breathe carbon dioxide and convert it into oxygen. They also soak up lots of harmful toxins and pollutants, therefore, purifying the air around you. Add a house plant to every room in your home and boost those green credentials.
Buy low-VOC paint
Giving your home a new lease of life with a fresh coat of paint is something most of us do on a regular basis. However, many people don’t understand the nastiness that comes from some paint, called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These release toxic emissions into the atmosphere for years after it was put on the walls. This is harmful to you and the planet, so make sure you pick up a tin labelled low VOC.
Avoid carpet
To be as environmentally friendly as possible you should avoid carpet. It is full of chemicals and pollutants that will harm the planet during the manufacturing process, as well as also releasing toxins into your home during its lifespan. When it comes to flooring you ideally want to opt for a real wood floor.
Organic bedding
Organic bedding is not only good for the environment but also good for people who have skin allergies or sensitivities such as eczema and psoriasis. Organic textiles are kinder to our environment and are a much healthier lifestyle choice.
If you are constantly feeling unclean when you get into bed and your mattress feels heavy, it could be full of dust mites. Consider getting yourself a new bed from Divan Beds Centre for a cleaner, cosy and more healthy sleep – and buy a decent bed that’s built to last so that you can get plenty of use out of this key piece of furniture.
Choose the right candles
There is nothing quite like a relaxing evening in the warm glow of a candle but you need to be careful on which candles you are choosing. Cheap candles release harmful VOCs just like standard paints and they may also contain metal in the wick to keep it burning upright. You want to make sure you are choosing candles that are made from natural materials such as beeswax, soy or scented with essentials oils.
Thermal curtains
Replace your standard curtains with thermal ones to reduce your energy bills. This is as good for your bank balance as it is the planet, making it a no-brainer for your eco-friendly home.
A more eco-friendly interior can be achieved with a few smart choices. Always ‘think green’ and you can do your bit to avoid harming the environment.
