When the cooler temperatures of fall come the last thing you are likely thinking of is your lawn.
However, using this time of year to fix any issues that you may have with your lawn can be a
vital tool to improving the overall appearance of your property.
Here are just a few tips to help you this fall:
Care for Irrigation Systems
When fall comes, you should ensure that your irrigation system will be protected throughout
the system, especially if you live in an area that is prone to hard freezes.
These freezes can destroy any sprinkler system or other type of irrigation system.
If you are unsure how to prepare irrigation systems yourself, you should utilize the services of
Don’t Stop Mowing
Be sure to keep on mowing and watering your grass even as the fall approaches.
During the fall is when your lawn is trying to absorb more nutrients and energy in
anticipation of a long cold winter.
When the summer approaches be sure to lower your blades to the lowest setting so
that the grass can get more direct sunlight and water.
You should not allow the grass blades to become too low, as they need to maintain
at least a third of their height to prevent the grass from turning brown.
Aerate Your Soil
When you aerate your soil it will be easier for water, oxygen and fertilize to reach the
place in the ground where they are most needed and beneficial for your grass.
The cost of a gas powered aerator usually runs around $70.00 a day, which is very
cost effective for the benefits that are offered to your lawn.
This machine is self-propelled and easily punches holes in your soil.
Also, the machine will break up any plugs of dirt that are present in your soil.
For very large lawns it may be wiser to seek the services of an experienced lawn
professional.
Raking Leaves
While raking leaves is likely not anyone’s idea of fun, it is crucial to remove any fallen
leaves from the ground as soon as possible.
If you wait too long, the leaves can become wet, and form a mat that is impenetrable and
will eventually suffocate your grass and be a breeding ground for fungal diseases.
If you are completely against raking, you can use a bagging mower.
These are usually very effective and faster.
The point is that no matter what method you use, the leaves should be removed.
The fact is that just because fall and winter descend it does not mean that it is time to neglect
or ignore your lawn.
It still needs care and attention to ensure that it will be lush and healthy come spring.
