Positioned slap bang in the middle of the Mediterranean, you can understand why flights to Malta

are packed full of sun-seeking tourists wanting to visit this idyllic island.

However, if you would prefer to escape the crowds and uncover a different side of this unassuming

yet engrossing island, then you are in luck.

In fact, there is more to Malta than meets the eye–especially if you know where to go and what to see.

With this in mind, here is not-your-usual Malta destination guide.

Rocky Beaches

The vast majority of tourists will head straight to their resort’s beach for some much needed rest

and relaxation.

But if you don’t mind swapping sand for rocks, then you can enjoy a bit more peace and tranquillity.

It takes about 10 minutes to actually access Selmun Beach by foot, but this means the chances of

having to share with anyone else are slim.

Just make sure you take supplies for the day, as there are no facilities to speak of.

The Back-Streets of Valletta

Find everything from quaint little chapels to multi-storey apartment blocks in the back streets of Valletta.

Even though you should spend a bit of time exploring the main sights of Malta’s UNESCO-listed capital,

the back-streets of Valletta are arguably more intriguing and interesting.

Along these 400-year-old alleyways you will find everything from quaint little chapels, to multi-storey

apartment blocks.

All the while, friendly locals will give you a smile as they go about their daily routines.

Jeep Safari

The only way you can see certain parts of Malta is if you have the right transportation, such as a

4×4 off-roader.

On a jeep safari, you’ll be able to visit areas of the island untouched by the footprint of tourism.

This adrenaline-fuelled, adventure-packed activity isn’t for the faint-hearted, as you will no doubt

be knocked around from pillar to post.

However, experienced tour guides will keep you safe, and provide a running commentary about Malta’s

secret sights.

Rural Gozo

Make time to explore Gozo’s historical highlights and cultural attractions as well as the island’s charming countryside and luscious landscapes.

Most visitors to Malta will find the time to take the ferry to nearby Gozo, due to its historical

highlights and cultural attractions.

However, the island’s charming countryside and luscious landscapes are also ripe for exploration.

Start inland, walk through the valleys and watch the local farmers tend to their crops.

As you make your way to the sea, you can hike along the dramatic coastline, before heading down

to the large caves at water level.

It may well be a popular destination, among holidaymakers interested in soaking up the sun and

sampling some Mediterranean cuisine, but Malta has much more in store if you are prepared to

step off the beaten path.
